The second annual conference of our network took place as announced, in Utrecht last February and was a successful and intense academic institutional event. The programme addressed the grand challenges facing the contemporary Humanities in Europe and beyond, by focussing on new developments in the environmental, digital, neural and global Humanities. The assumption behind the conference was a consensus about the importance of the anthropocene – the era when humanity has acquired the ability to influence the future of our planet as a whole. This places new duties and responsibilities onto Humanities scholars, as it does on all citizens and consumers.

EU research ministers agreed to strengthen social science and humanities in Horizon 2020. It is a full turn around after 25,000 researchers signed a petition.
Here is a brief quote of the decision: "Social sciences and humanities research will be fully integrated into each of the pillars of Horizon 2020 and each of the specific objectives. In relation to the societal challenges, social sciences and humanities are mainstreamed as an essential element of the activities needed to tackle each of the societal challenges to enhance their impact. The specific objective of the societal challenge 'Europe in a changing world:Inclusive, innovative and reflective societies' will support social sciences and humanities research by focusing on inclusive, innovative and reflective societies."
EASSH and 25,000 signatures helped bring this about!
